Going Global–Cultural Christmas Tree Decor

My favorite holiday book growing up (and now, to be honest) was one that told about how children in different cultures celebrated Christmas.  I’ve always been fascinated with different lands, traditions, architecture, and family life.  One thing that captivated me then and has only been heightened since I’ve grown up is the texture, pattern and color of global and ethnic decor.  Colors were rich, exotic, mysterious, and the designs told a mythical story of rich history.  9 times out of 10 I will still be drawn to items and patterns that reflect a worldly perspective.

This next week people across the world will be decorating their homes for the holidays.  Rather than going traditional with red & green or silver & blue, why not incorporate decor with a cultural flavor!  Here are some ideas to deck your halls:

From Crate and Barrel, these lacy snowflake motifs are laser cut in brass, hand-etched and finished in matte and shining silver, channeling Middle Eastern and Mediterranean art & architecture. Set of 4 for $15.80.
I love, love, love this felt bead garland is available through ColetteBream. I can recall illustrations of sweet little Swiss girls in their traditional embroidered frocks and blond braids just by looking at these soft, bright balls. $39.00
Many cultures place a huge emphasis on the natural world, including animals. These hand-carved wood ornaments (available in caribou and ram) from Anthropologie are neutral enough for a contemporary tree, yet the rough-cuts and realism are great for a traditional room. $38.00
This skirt has the makings of a family heirloom. Hand-crocheted in wool, this colorful skirt by Anthropologie is available for $298.00
Inspired by nature's first ornaments, these glittery pinecones by World Market pay homage to the rustic, snow-topped seed pods that are an icon of holiday decorating. $11.97 for 3
