DIY FRIDAY: Refinished Cabinet Hardware

I had posted this back in January, but it bears repeating for our DIY FRIDAY.  A client clued me in to this great Do-It-Yourself project for updating your cabinet pulls and knobs for less than $15.  All of them.  And, we’re not talking about just going from traditional to contemporary with some silver spray paint.  This takes shiny or brushed nickel pulls and transforms them into the popular and classic oil rubbed bronze finish.

Thank you, Kim, for providing the great photos and process!  I can attest that they look FANTASTIC in real life!

Step 1:

Spray paint with black Rust-Oleum

Universal all-surface paint for metals/wood/etc. in a flat or satin finish.

Step 2:

Hand rub with Rub-n-Buff (copper), using a tiny bit.  (Rub-n-Buff can be found at craft stores such as Hobby Lobby).  More can be added if desired.  Rub immediately to desired look.  Adding more to raised edges looks good too.

Finished Product Example:

From bare pewter finish to oil rubbed bronze.
